Police identify airman killed in east Wichita shooting

The Wichita Police Department has identified the victim in Saturday's homicide as 20-year-old Chancelor Williams of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Officers arrested 25-year-old Mark Markeithen McClaine Saturday afternoon on charges of 1st Degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery in connection with the death of Williams.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a disturbance broke out at a party being held at an apartment. McClaine exited a vehicle and fired a gun into the crowd striking the four victims.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office.

Wichita police arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the death of a McConnell Air Force Base airman.

Officers were called around 2:05 a.m. to the Horizons East Apartment complex near Central and Rock Road for a disturbance with shots fired.

When officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old man unresponsive in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Two other men, ages 21 and 22, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A 19-year old woman was also taken by private vehicle to a local hospital with a gunshot wound where she remains hospitalized, but is expected to survive.

Police say a party was being held at one of the apartment units. There was a disturbance that occurred in the parking lot, and Markeithen McClaine fired multiple shots into the crowd.

McClaine was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery.

8:00 a.m.

An official with McConnell Air Force says the victims in this morning's shooting at Central and Rock Road are members of the Air Force, stationed at the base.

“Team McConnell is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our Airmen,” said Col. Richard Tanner, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Commander in a press release. “We come together as a community to support our families and all those affected by this tragic incident.”

5:00 a.m.

Wichita police say a 20-year-old man is dead, three others are hurt after a shooting at an east Wichita apartment complex early Friday morning.

Police were called to the complex at around 2:00 a.m.

There, they found a 20-year-old man who was unresponsive. They performed life-saving procedures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men in their 20s were also found at the scene with minor gunshot wounds. They were treated and released.

At around the same time, a 19-year-old woman showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound.. She's listed in serious condition.

Police say there was a party going on at the apartment complex, when some sort of disturbance broke out in the parking lot. At that point, police say, someone got out of a vehicle and fired shots into the crowd.

Police say there is no indication that the shooting is gang related.

Right now, they do not have anyone in custody in connection with the shooting.

Investigators are spent the early morning hours talking with with eyewitnesses about what happened.

They ask anyone who has information to come forward by calling police or Crimestoppers.

Wichita police are investigating a shooting in the 500 block of N. Rock Road.

Crews were called to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex just after 2:00 a.m.

Eyewitness News has confirmed one person has suffered very critical injuries in that incident.
