WICHITA, Kan. Update 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2019
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says two man and one woman face charges after one of the men ran from officers at the Sedgwick County Jail at 141 West Elm Street in downtown Wichita.
A little before 4 p.m., Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lt. Tim Myers says 28-year-old Victor Walker was in the jail's lobby when deputies discovered he had an active felony warrant.
Deputies handcuffed Walker and placed him under arrest for the warrant, Myers says. But as a deputy collected his property, he ran from the jail's lobby.
He ran out the door, striking two people with the door, Myers says. The sheriff's office says those two people received minor injuries. Myers confirms one of them is a reporter for KAKE News.
Outside the jail, Myers says Walker ran to a black Chevy Camaro parked on Water Street. Walker got into the driver's seat and drove off, Myers says. With his hands cuffed behind his back, Walker worked the pedals while a front-seat passenger in the Camaro tried to steer.
The Camaro hit three parked cars and rove over a sheriff sergeant's foot, Myers says. He says the Camaro traveled north on Water Street, then went east on Pine before turning south on Topeka down to Kellogg.
The car then headed east on Kellogg to Oliver. On the off-ramp, the Camaro hit two more vehicles before crashing into a traffic light at Kellogg and Oliver.
Deputies arrested Walker and booked him for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, two counts of aggravated assault, felony obstruction, aggravated escape custody, felony evade and elude, possession of marijuana and the original felony warrant.
Police booked the Camaro's front-seat passenger, 37-year-old Charles L. Patton II, for aggravated assault, felony obstruction, aiding escape and felony evade and elude.
Police booked Camille L.Hollands, a backseat passenger in the Camaro, for possession of marijuana.
Myers says there are no more suspects identified in this case, but the investigation into this case continues.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office makes an arrest following a chaotic series of events that began at the county jail downtown.
A Sedgwick County dispatcher says a man fled from the jail, escaping as officers were taking him into custody for a warrant.
The sheriff's office says officers again took that man into custody, but not before the brief escape led to several accidents in Wichita.
Drivers are asked to avoid an accident scene in the area of Kellogg Frontage Road and Oliver. The sheriff's office says it anticipated the intersection to remain closed through the Friday evening rush hour.
