President Trump signs farm bill after 'Green Acres' announcement on Twitter
Republican senators report Senator Pat Roberts and other ag committee members gathered at the White House Thursday afternoon as President Donald Trump signs the farm bill.
The president's signature puts the bipartisan legislation into action. Ahead of the signing, the president made a creative announcement of the action he was about to take. President Trump tweeted a video clip from the 2006 Emmys where he sang the theme song for the classic, 1960s TV show, "Green Acres" with actress Megan Mullally.
The farm bill authorizes $867 billion in federal agriculture funding,
The bill passed both the House of Representatives and Senate with strong bipartisan support, and addresses areas including farming, nutrition, conservation, trade, energy, and forestry.
During the legislative process, proposed expanded work requirements for some who receive Food Stamps were jettisoned, along with controversial forestry changes purportedly aimed at combating wildfires.
The passed bill also includes a provision that would make hemp a legal agricultural commodity - a proposal led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - which removes it from the federal list of controlled substances and allows hemp farmers to apply for crop insurance.
