Reno County DA rules Hutchinson officer-involved shooting justified

RENO COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) The Reno County District Attorney has ruled that an officer-involved shooting that happened on June 20 in Hutchinson as justified.

Police shot 21-year-old Brendan Jones in the leg during the standoff.

District Attorney Keith Shroeder says officers were aware that Jones had an extensive record of criminal activity which including resistance to police.

Jones said he would peacefully surrender if allowed to speak to his mother. His mother arrived on scene and spoke to Jones over the phone and tried to get him to surrender.

Prosecutors say Jones opened the door and raised a handgun, firing multiple shots at officers.

Police returned fire and Jones went back in the home.

Jones eventually crawled out of the home unarmed and was taken to a hospital.
