The Reno County Planning Commission Tuesday night narrowly approved its recommendation to deny a proposal for a wind farm in the southeast part of the county near Cheney Lake.

The planning commission denied the recommendation 4-3 for a company called Next Era to build the wind farm.

At Tuesday night's meeting in Hutchinson, Next Era did submit a new proposal map, saying they took out a few towers and moved others with an adjusted plan.

The majority of Tuesday's meeting centered around the proximity of the proposed wind turbines to homes and property lines, as well as the distance from schools and churches.

The planning commission will submit its recommendation to the county who can either approve that recommendation (denying the application for Next Era to build the wind farm) or go against the commission's recommendation and approve the company's application to build the wind farm.

The Reno County Commission has the final say on the proposed wind farm. The commission's next regularly-scheduled meeting is next Tuesday (April 30) at the Reno County Courthouse in Hutchinson.
