Ridge road between Central and Maple continues to be a problem for drivers in west Wichita.

Heat caused the road to buckle Tuesday, forcing the city to shut down part of it.

Those who live along Ridge Road or drive on it daily know, even with two lanes, say this area can get congested.

Tuesday night during rush hour, Sedgwick County dispatchers started to take calls from people reporting the problem in the road.

The City of Wichita says it recognizes that the road is a problem. It's going to work to get it fixed as soon as possible, but it could require some patience.

Patience from drivers and people like Murphy who live in the area.

"It's going to create some problems for sure, especially during the five o'clock time when people are getting off work. It's going to be a bad situation," said Murphy.

A city spokesperson says the goal is to get the road fixed by Friday. Depending on any utilities under this section, that could delay crews.

If traffic Wednesday is unmanageable, the city will try to find ways to address it. But there may not be too much they can do, leaving drivers to slow down or find a different route.

The city says the road buckled because of heat caused stress fatigue. Road damage like that is common, but the city says what happened on ridge was particularly bad.
