Expect delays as road work continues on North Junction

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) The Kansas Department of Transportation will continue their work on a project to reconfigure Wichita's North Junction.

Starting at 9 a.m., KDOT will close a lane on northbound I-235 where it runs together with eastbound K-96 for re-striping. The lane should re-open by 3 p.m..

The larger work on the Green Project begins later tonight at 7 p.m. in the same area. The closure will stretch from Meridian to Broadway so crews can remove part of the existing bridge over the Little Arkansas River.

"This closure is happening because they will actually saw off the right side of the bridge on NB I-235 over the Little Arkansas River. That will take 3 ft. off the bridge which we'll then put new concrete barrier there and that will be our new sidewall. Then they can build the new half section of bridge right next to that," says Tom Hein with KDOT's Wichita office.

The detour for EB K-96 will be to SB I-235 to EB US 54 to NB I-135. NB I-235 will exit at Meridian and can detour to SB I-235 to EB US 54 to NB I-135.

KDOT says the closure could last all weekend with the provision that all lanes will be open before 6 a.m. on Monday (March 18).
