Ajani has arrived.

The Sedgwick County Zoo welcomed its latest addition Thursday morning.

Ajani, the elephant, comes from the Birmingham Zoo.

The zoo says the rest of the herd has not yet met Ajani, but introductions will begin soon.

The Elephant Boma will be closed for a bit while Ajani settles in.

The Sedgwick County Zoo’s elephant herd will soon be growing.

The zoo announced Thursday that Ajani, a bull elephant from Birmingham Zoo, will join the seven elephants who currently call Wichita zoo home.

Ajani is 17 years old, weighs 9,500 pounds, and measures 9 feet, 6 inches at the shoulder.

The zoo hopes that he will be able to breed with some of the female elephants. His move was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Elephant Species Survival Plan®.

Ajani is expected to arrive sometime this spring.
