A semi truck fire shut down traffic on the Kansas Turnpike for a couple hours Sunday evening.

The fire broke out near mile marker 65 near the Towanda service station. The driver was able to get out of the truck uninjured and the southbound lane of the turnpike near Towanda reopened after crews finished work to clear the scene.

Kansas Turnpike officials say the semi was hauling frozen turkeys.

Fire officials expected to remain on scene through the night to put out hot spots from the fire.
