Silver Alert canceled: Missing Miami County woman found dead in floodwaters

MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. Friday, October 12, 2018

A woman reported missing from Miami County Wednesday (Oct. 10) evening has been found dead in Paola, Kan. The statewide Silver Alert for 78-year-old Hazel Phillips has been canceled.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office says deputies were dispatched to Hospital Drive south of 327th Street for a vehicle in the water Friday morning (Oct. 12).

Flood waters had receded and showed the roof of a silver passenger car.

The Osawatomie Fire Department removed a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu owned by Hazel Phillips from the water. She was found dead with the vehicle.

Her cause of death is still under investigation.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation issues a statewide Silver Alert for a 78-year-old woman reported missing from Miami County.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office says 78-year-old Hazel Phillips was last contacted by family Tuesday evening. Her family says she told them she would be leaving for Drexel, Mo. Wednesday morning, but she did not reach her destination.

Hazel has brown hair and green eyes. She stands about 5'6 and weighs about 120 pounds. Her vehicle is described as a silver 2008 Chevy Malibu with Kansas tag 450 HLB.

"Hazel may be suffering from medical conditions which could be a safety concern for her," the sheriff's office says.

The sheriff's office says Hazel may be in the Paola or Osawatomie areas. Anyone who sees her or knows where should could be should call the Miami County Sheriff's Office at 913-294-3232.
