The Sterling Police Department Wednesday evening "encourages everyone to lock up their homes and outbuildings and report any suspicious activity."

This comes after police responded to a report Wednesday afternoon of a home invasion in the city. In this incident, police say an unknown man entered a home with a resident inside.

"Nobody was injured and the unknown suspect was not believed to be armed," Sterling police say.

Police describe the suspect in this case as a white man standing about six feet tall with a slender, muscular build. The man is further described as having a tattoo on the right side of his neck. The report says he wore khaki shorts, a black shirt and a black ski mask.

"A suspect description was quickly released via social media (and) several places including the community daycare and city pool were placed on lockdown as a result of the suspect fleeing on foot in an unknown direction," police say.

The Rice County Sheriff's Office and Lyons Police Department responded to assist Sterling police in looking for the man and canvassing homes in the area. As of Wednesday evening, police say the man identified as the suspect in this case is still at large.
