WICHITA, Kan. Friday's storms interrupted state high school baseball and softball tournaments, as well as the state track meet where thousands of athletes, coaches and fans from across the state gather during the final weekend of May each year.
Wichita State University is the site of two major high-school sports events: the Class 5A baseball tournament at Eck Stadium and the state track meet for every class , drawing large crowds from all over Kansas to Cessna Stadium.
By 4 p.m. Friday, almost every event at the state track meet was called off for Friday with plans to resume competition Saturday. The delay likely will push the meet into later in the evening Saturday. Most years, the state track meet wraps up Saturday afternoon.
Coaches and athletes at the state track meet got a late start Friday due to the rain, followed by hours of delay. It started with a three-hour rain delay. About two hours after competition finally started, a storm arrived with lightning and the pouring rain.
Thousands left the stadium as it started to rain. Many headed for their cars to wait out the rain, but some stayed behind, hoping the skies would clear for competition to resume.
It's been a similar situation for state baseball and softball tournaments across Kansas where semifinal games are being bumped to Saturday. You can follow schedule changes for every tournament site here:
