Strong winds rip roof off new church in Hays

HAYS, Kan. (KWCH) Several viewers sent us photos of shelf clouds that showed the leading edge of a system that moved through Hays Tuesday night.

It's a sign of dangerous winds coming out of the storm, winds that caused significant damage and even delayed the planned first day of school.

Some of the worst damage was at Celebration Community Church where strong winds ripped off the building's roof and around a light pole. Inside the church, the walls and floor are soaked.

Senior Pastor Brant Rice says that while the worship center is only two years old, it's just a building.

"(We) will have to probably go to just metal and concrete in and start again," he said.

Father and son, Sandon and Wesley Slaubaugh, volunteered on Wednesday to clean up their church, but they too, say it's about the people.

"The spiritual part is still going so we're all in good spirits. That's the best part is the church as a whole is not the building. The church is the people."
