Tanker cars tip over in Hays train derailment
The Hays Police Department says tanker cars tipped over in a train derailment reported a little after 5 p.m. Sunday near 9th and Milner in Hays.
Police say the Union Pacific Railroad contacted dispatch to report the derailment in which three tanker cars were laying on their side off the track with a fourth still on the track.
"The tanker cars contain ethanol, however there are no leads, so there are no hazards to the public," Hays police say. "As a precaution, there have been limited housing evacuations in the immediate vicinity."
Police say the derailment didn't block any intersections, but the Hays Fire Department established a 300-foot perimeter around the derailment.
"The traveling public is asked to avoid this area and observe all cones and barricades," police say.
