Several construction projects this weekend will impact parts of Wichita.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says this Friday (Oct.12) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday (Oct.15) interior lanes of the I-235/U.S. 54 (Kellogg) Interchange will be closed to replace the bridge. This includes US 54 under I-235 & I-235 over U.S. 54.

Detours will use the outside diamond-shaped ramps on U.S. 54 and on I-235.

Detours for Weekend Closure:

• EB U.S.54 traffic will be routed onto SB I-235 to K-42 to NB I-235 to EB U.S.54.

• WB U.S.54 traffic will be routed onto NB I-235 to Central Avenue to SB I-235 to WB U.S. 54.

• NB I-235 will exit to EB U.S.54, exit at Edwards Street then use WB U.S. 54
to NB I-235.

• SB traffic on I-235 will exit to WB U.S. 54 to Dugan to EB U.S. 54 to SB I-235.

At noon Friday (Oct. 12) eastbound K-96 will be closed over I-235 for . shoulder replacement. All eastbound K-96 traffic coming from west of I-235 will detour on south I-235 to 25th Street to northbound I-235 to eastbound K-96 to Meridian.

Eastbound K-96 should re-open to single-lane traffic over I-235 on Sunday afternoon.

The eastbound K-96 exit ramp to Meridian remains closed for bridge repairs until November. As a detour, drivers can exit to SB I-235, exit at 25th St., turn left onto 25th St. then turn left onto NB I-235 then exit to Meridian.

In addition, repairs to the expansion joint on SB I-135 at 29th St. will be completed (Oct.12-15) with single lane traffic on SB I-135 and the ramp from 29th to SB I-135 is closed.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has postponed construction on eastbound K-96 to northbound I-235 until next weekend (Friday, Oct. 12 to Monday, Oct. 15).

There are no closures planned for this weekend.

Update Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018

An active stretch of weather expected to drop several inches of rain on the Wichita area over the next week, is already impacting a weekend plan.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says lane closures planned for the I-235/US 54 Interchange Friday evening into Monday morning are delayed due to expected storms. KDOT says closures including US 54 under I-235 and I-235 over US 54 are delayed until next weekend (Friday, Oct. 12 to Monday, Oct. 15).

The approximate three-day closures are needed for construction including replacement of the bridge approaches over the Wichita-Valley Center Floodway east and westbound bridges, removal of bridge construction forms over US 54 and I-235 lanes of traffic and the mill and overlay of asphalt pavement, KDOT says.

The Kansas Department of Transportation this week highlighted a few current or upcoming projects that will impact traffic in parts of Wichita.

Coming up this weekend from 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, interior lanes of the I-235/US 54 (Kellogg) Interchange will be closed. This includes US 54 under I-235 and I-235 over US 54. The lane closures are needed for construction including replacement of the bridge approaches over the Wichita-Valley Center Floodway east and westbound bridges, removal of bridge construction forms over US 54 and I-235 lanes of traffic and the mill and overlay of asphalt pavement.

"Detours will use the outside diamond-shaped ramps on US 54 and on I-235," KDOT says.

Additional, temporary lane closures are planned with work starting next week associated with the I-235/US 54 Interchange project, KDOT says weather permitting, starting Monday (Oct. 8), the left lane of east and westbound Kellogg over West Street will be closed for about one week for median concrete barrier repair.

Also weather permitting Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and overnight, east and westbound Kellogg could be reduced to two lanes for mill and overlay on east and westbound Kellogg.

Weather permitting next Wednesday through Saturday (Oct. 10-13) the eastbound US 54 ramp to southbound I-235 could close for asphalt pavement replacement and other repairs, KDOT says.

Eastbound Kellogg west of I-235 is reduced to two lanes and a few ramps are closed with marked detours. These ramps include eastbound Kellogg to northbound I-235, westbound Kellogg to northbound I-235 and northbound I-235 to westbound Kellogg.

With the K-96 at I-235 Interchange, the Meridian entrance ramp to northbound I-235/eastbound K-96 is closed until Wednesday (Oct. 3) for pavement patching.

At noon Friday (Oct. 5) eastbound K-96 will be closed over I-235 for shoulder replacement. During the closure, all eastbound K-96 traffic coming from west of I-235 will detour on south I-235 to 25th Street to northbound I-235 to eastbound K-96 to Meridian.

"Eastbound K-96 should re-open to single-lane traffic over I-235 on Sunday afternoon," KDOT says.

The eastbound K-96 exit ramp to Meridian remains closed for bridge repairs until November and there's a single-lane of traffic on eastbound K-96 from the Big Ark River bridge to Meridian.

Some bits of good news for drivers include the scheduled reopening Tuesday of the westbound Kellogg ramp to northbound I-235 and the possible reopening next week of the eastbound Kellogg ramp to northbound I-235.

Looking farther north, KDOT says the project that's closed 45th Street North and Hillside since May is on track for completion in late fall.
