Marshall, LaPolice appear in 1st District Congressional Candidate Forum

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Eyewitness News hosted our Campaign 2016 candidate forum Tuesday night in the First District U.S. House race.

The First District, or "Big First" is the only Kansas seat in Congress with no incumbent left in the race. However, defeating Tim Huelskamp in the Primary didn't leave an open field for Republican, Dr. Roger Marshall. Now, he's facing a conservative Independent in Alan LaPolice.

The "Big First" is a race where both candidates say they're the Washington outsiders who will work to bring Democrats and Republicans together in Congress and to get things done.

That similarity is where the battle begins between LaPolice and Marshall. The candidates answered questions on everything from supporting Donald Trump to tax policy and gun control, all topics they save they've heard a lot on the campaign trail.

You can see how they responded to questions on gun control and marijuana legalization in the clips below:

LaPolice says he was there to point out that Marshall sounds like "any other seasoned, canned, scripted politician."

Marshall says he didn't go after LaPolice personally and tried to share what he says is his positive message of solutions with people.

The race could become a tight one after the Libertarian candidate for the First Congressional District dropped out of the race Tuesday, throwing his endorsement to LaPolice.

But Marshall, who defeated incumbent Tim Huelskamp in the August Primary, continues to have the advantage in organization and financing going into the final week of the campaign.
