Wamego firefighter succumbs to injuries suffered on duty

WAMEGO, Kan. (WIBW and KWCH) A Wamego firefighter passed away Tuesday from injuries he suffered after a fire a day earlier.

In a news release, Wamego Fire Dept. officials said John Randle worked a structure call that came in a little before 5 a.m. Monday They say Randle suffered a fall while "returning fire apparatus to service."

Randle was airlifted from Wamego Health Center to Stormont Vail in Topeka. He passed away from his injuries Tuesday.

Area agencies were reacting to the loss Tuesday night.

The Westmoreland Township Fire Dept. posted on Facebook, "It is a loss felt by all of us, for his fire brothers, his friends and his family. As always we are here if you need us. Rest easy brother, we've got it from here."

The Wamego Police Department says members of various local jurisdictions are assisting with manning the Wamego Fire Department so that Randle's fellow firefighters can have a chance to grieve their fallen brother.

Funeral Services for Randle will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Stewart Funeral Home, 4370 Salzer Road, Wamego, Kan.

Burial will occur at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 7, 2018, at Iuka Township Cemetery, NE 60th St, Iuka, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Wamego Firefighter Auxiliary through Stewart Funeral Home.
