WICHITA, Kan. The fun doesn't have to end with March Madness. Starting in April 2019, basketball fans in Wichita will have another team to follow.
The Wichita Wizards, a new minor league basketball team, at a news conference Thursday announced tryout information, unveiled its jersey design and apparel sponsorship from Adidas.
As part of Thursday's news conference, Wizards General Manager Daniel Ferris gave a team jersey to Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell. The mayor joked about sporting the jersey during early-morning pickup games at the YMCA.
For current and former players hoping to play for the team, three initial tryout dates are set with a second and final round on Dec. 30 for those invited to continue past Round 1.
The "Diamond in the Rough" tryout for athletes who played in high school, but did not compete at the college or professional level is set for 6 to 9 pm. Nov. 30.
There are two dates available for athletes who played beyond high school to try out. The first available tryout date for these athletes is 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 9. The second is 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 16.
Players from these three tryout dates invited for a final look, will have that final tryout on Dec. 30. The Wichita Sports Forum at 2668 N. Greenwich Road will host every tryout.
Players wanting to tryout for the Wizards can register to do so on the team's website.
The Wizards are part of an expansion in the MLBA (Minor League Basketball Association) which formed in August 2017.
The team will play the Red River Valley Conference against teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and possibly others as the league continues to approve of new teams.
