NEW YORK (WIBW) Former Washburn football player Corey Ballentine just took a huge step toward his dream of playing in the NFL. On Thursday morning, the one-time Ichabod defensive back has officially signed with the New York Giants.

The Giants had drafted Ballentine on April 27, just hours before the central Topeka shooting that wounded him and killed Washburn junior Dwane Simmons.

The Shawnee Heights alum, who was drafted higher than any other pick in Washburn history, was originally set to report for the rookie minicamp earlier this month. The Giants, however, encouraged him to stay home and be with his loved ones instead.

The Topeka Police Dept. has not made any arrests in connection with the shooting and the investigation remains ongoing.
