Winter shelters open extra hours this weekend due to dangerous cold
With temperatures dropping well below freezing and wind chills possibly dipping below zero, Inter-Faith Ministries is helping the community it serves by keeping its two emergency winter shelters in Wichita (one each for men and women) open all day Saturday and Sunday.
Every year during the "cold" months, shelters, located at 841 N. Market and 848 N. Market are regularly open daily from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Nov. 1 to March 31.
"Residents of the shelter are usually served both dinner and breakfast, but will also receive lunch this weekend as they stay out of the cold," Inter-Faith Ministries says. ''
“Our Emergency Winter Shelters provide a warm, dry and safe place for men and women who might otherwise have nowhere to sleep during the coldest months of the year,” said Inter-Faith Ministries President/CEO LaTasha St. Arnault.
Inter-Faith Ministries says it served 1,013 people at shelters last season from Nov. 1 2017 through March 31, 2018.
“We pride ourselves on being a no-barrier shelter where we serve anyone who comes to our door—nobody will be turned away,” says Inter-Faith Ministries (IFM) Program Director Christen Sampamurthy.
