A woman who tried helping a stranger is in the hospital in critical, but stable condition at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Newton police say around 10 p.m. Saturday, a man was getting off on U.S. 50 heading to the hospital for a medical condition when he lost control and struck a power pole.
Police say a man and woman stopped to help when a semi drove by, getting caught in the power lines. They snagged and hit the woman outside of the car.
The family identified the woman as 40-year-old Kristy Hermstein.
"It's something you don't ever feel is ever going to happen to you and when it does you don't know how to respond," said James Casey, father.
He says the officer on scene saved her life.
"With the amount of injury our daughters had suffered, she was losing a lot of blood at a fast rate and he applied tourniquets to her legs to slow the bleeding down until fire department and ambulance people could get there and because of that action she's still here with us," said Casey. "That is what we are the most appreciative of because not everyone goes to that extent and he did."
Emergency crews took her to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition, both of her legs had to be amputated below the knee, in addition to a broken arm. All a result of being the Good Samaritan her family says she's always been.
"There are Good Samaritans out there that will stop and take the time and attempt to do the right thing and help another person out. She did and now we're living with whats left and trying to take and rebuild from there," said Casey.
A family friend started a GoFundMe that has already raised nearly $3,000. The family says they appreciate the support.
