19-year-old bystander killed fleeing from shooting at west Wichita club
Wichita police say a woman shot early Sunday morning has died from her injuries.
Capt. Brent Allred identified the woman as 19-year-old Sonja Brown, of Wichita.
He said Brown was inside the 511 Club located in the 500 block of N. West Street when a fight broke out between two men and shots were fired.
Brown was struck as she was trying to run from the gunfire.
Allred said police now need help from eyewitnesses to make an arrest in the case.
"It's time for people to take a stand against stuff that's wrong, and this was wrong. A female that was there to have a good time, even though it was after hours, was shot and killed inside this club. And, those individuals that know about this, need to report it. So we can make sure we hold the people responsible, accountable for this," said Allred.
He said the club has a liquor license until 2 a.m. and was supposed to shut down at that same time but continued to operate after hours.
Allred said 30 gun shell casings were found in the parking lot of the business. He said a restaurant located down the street was "shot up" and investigators believe it's connected to the shooting at the club. He said they also believe there may be another shooting victim that has yet to come forward.
"So there were a lot of things going on at this club," said Allred. "A lot of people there that have not come forward yet. And, I'm asking them to come forward to give us the information so we can do our job, to investigate this, to hold the person responsible for the victim's family.
Allred said gang members were involved in the shooting.
Brown's death marks Wichita's 31st homicide of 2019.
