Police arrest two in connection with fatal weekend shooting

UPDATE: Wichita police have identified a man shot and killed early Saturday morning on North Piatt as 25-year-old Semaj Chambers.

Police booked a 17-year-old into the Juvenile Detention Facility and a 33-year-old into the Segwick County Jail in connection with the shooting.

UPDATE 7:30 a.m. 12/3/2017:

Booking sheets from the Sedgwick County Jail confirm 33-year-old Joshua John Prevett has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Semaj Chambers.

Wichita Police arrested Prevett Saturday afternoon. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of first degree murder in the 1700 block of North Piatt.



Family identifies a man killed at 1100 N Estelle early Saturday morning as 25-year-old Semaj Chambers.

Officers found Chambers in critical condition in the street. He was taken to Wesley for treatment where he later died from his injuries.

Wichita police haven't released a motive for the shooting but say they don't believe it is gang-related.

Eyewitness News spoke with one woman who says she sees people at the home where the victim lives regularly and has heard arguing before.

"I was sitting there, and all of a sudden I heard something go "Pop!" like that and I'm like what the heck was that? And then like 30 seconds later I heard the guy say "oh god he shot me." and about that time I was just like "ahh! get up call the law. this guy just got shot!" says Chasity Talloey.

Police are still investigating the events that lead to the shooting.

Two men were located and arrested in connection with the shooting.

Wichita police haven't released the names o the two suspects but say one is a 33-year-old man and the other is 17-years-old.


UPDATE 2:45 p.m.

Officers have located and arrested a 33-year-old man and a 17-year-old man in the death of a Wichita man.

Police responded to the 1100 N Estelle early Saturday morning on a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived they found a man in critical condition in the street. That man was taken to Wesley where he later died.


A man is dead after being shot in a northeast Wichita neighborhood.

Wichita Police Sgt. Paul Kimble told Eyewitness News officers responded to a shooting call around 2 a.m. in the 1100 block of N. Estelle.

They arrived on scene to find the man in his mid-20's with a gunshot wound to the chest. The shooter had left the scene.

The victim was transported to Wesley in critical condition where he later died.

Kimble said WPD's homicide investigators are now looking into the case. Police are still trying to identify the shooter, but they do not believe this was a gang-related shooting.
