ANDALE, Kan. Monday (Sept. 16) marks one year since Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Kunze died in the line of duty.
Kunze's last act was heroic. he stopped the man who shot him before that man could hurt more people.
Deputy Kunze left behind a wife and a daughter. Friday night, the Andale community honored Kunze's life and his family at the high school's football game against Wellington.
Kunze's family received a bouquet of flowers before kickoff in Andale Friday night. Andale High School Athletic Director Steve Stanhope says Kunze used to patrol the western part of Sedgwick County that includes the Andale community. The connection also comes with a senior captain on the team.
Scottie Easter is the son of Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter. Easter wanted to pay tribute to Deputy Kunze, a suggestion that made his father proud.
"It just means that him, along with the senior captains, are growing into young men and they respect values and they respect the things that public safety does and they wanted to honor those folks," Easter says.
With the flowers, the Kunze family received a standing ovation that appreciates them and the life Robert Kunze gave.
"It's up to us as the sheriff's office to the public safety community to make sure that they know they're still part of this family and always will be," Easter says.
