WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- David Beaty and the Jayhawks currently have 13 players from the Wichita area on their 2018 roster.
Beaty is impressed with the freshmen crop: Collegiate's Cody McNerny, Cooper Root, and Mac Copeland, as well as Trinity Academy's Sam Schroeder, Kapaun's Nick Channel, and Northwest's Joseph Gilbertson.
"A lot of those kids have really been great additions to our program. I wouldn't be surprised to see all three [McNerney, Root, Copeland] get on the field at some point this year," he said
Root, Schroeder, and Gilbertson redshirted last season, but a new NCAA rule opens up the possibility for the rest of the Wichita bunch to see playing time without losing a year of eligibility.
"That new redshirt rule is going to be great because now these guys don't have to be ready by game one. If they're ready game 5, 6, 7, they still have four games to play and not lose a year of eligibility."
