Dragons retain top spot, ready to face another ranked foe
The Hutchinson Community College football team picked up all 16 first-place votes in this week’s NJCAA National Rankings after defeating No. 2 Butler on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
A 35-27 win over Butler gave the Blue Dragons a 5-0 overall record, one of five remaining undefeated teams in the Top 20.
Butler was the third-straight ranked team the Blue Dragons had faced. With the release of the new rankings, that mark will go to four-consecutive ranked teams. The top-ranked Blue Dragons travel to No. 20 Highland at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Kessinger Field.
With this poll, the NJCAA Football Computer Rankins have been integrated to the 16-member voting committee. The computer ranking will account for 25 percent of a team’s total ranking points. This week Hutchinson holds a 20.08-point lead over No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast.
East Mississippi is No. 2, followed by Butler and Lackawanna. Previous No. 3 Northwest Mississippi fell to No. 7 after getting upset last Thursday.
Garden City moves two spots up to No. 12 after a victory over former No. 18 Fort Scott. Highland jumps back into the rankings after a victory over previous-No. 15 Iowa Central. Fort Scott, Independence and Iowa Central are all receiving votes.
The Blue Dragons have been ranked in 16 consecutive polls.
