Former Chiefs coach Gunther Cunningham dies at 72


KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KWCH) The Kansas City Chiefs mourn the loss of the team's former coach, Gunther Cunningham.

Cunningham died on Saturday at the age of 72, according to KCTV 5.

The Chiefs hired Cunningham in 1999 but fired him two years later after his 16-16 record over that period. He returned to Kansas City in 2004 as the defensive coordinator and worked with the team until 2008.

He then went on to work for the Detroit Lions through 2016 as defensive coordinator and senior assistant.
