ANDALE, Kan. An Andale High School student from Frankfurt Germany is not just excelling in the classroom, but also in a sport he only started playing last month, not long after arriving in the U.S.
Matti Sicker who began learning English in third grade is already making friends, on and off the field of the sports he's growing to love, football.
"Like you're friends with the teachers here and in Germany that's not a thing," he says.
Also at school, he appreciates the opportunity to pick his own classes.
"In Germany, you can only choose one class, maybe two if you're lucky," he says.
Outside the classroom, he's a kicker for the Andale High School football team, a role helped by his background playing soccer in Germany. He describes the experience of playing a new sport for a school that excels at it as "incredible."
Through three weeks of the young season, Andale sits as the No. 2 ranked team in Class 3A.
"The excitement is really big, especially the Friday night games are really good," Sicker says. "I love the hype."
The excitement that comes with football season has Sicker considering other school sports later in the year.
"I don't know yet. I'll probably do wrestling, might do baseball too," he says.
