Shocker defense steps up against UConn, prepares for top shooter

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- Wichita State begins its home conference slate hosting the Houston Cougars and the leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference.

Redshirt-senior guard Rob Gray is averaging 19 points per game for Houston. In comparison, Landry Shamet is 5th in the conference, scoring 17 points per game.

The Shocker defense started clicking Saturday against UConn, just in time to face this high-powered offense.

Wichita state held UConn to .88 Points per possession, keping the huskies under 39% from the field and 19% from three.

They dominated the rebound battle, as they typically do. The Shockers out-rebounding UConn 47-34.

Gregg Marshall was impressed with his defense in its AAC debut.

"I think Conner [Frankamp] played some of his best defense," he said. "I think Austin Reaves was tremendous. [Zach] Brown always gets a tough defensive assignment. The big guys always do a good job. It was a good all around defensive performance."

Wichita State hosts Houston Thursday night at 6pm at Koch Arena. The school is "striping" the arena for the home opener.
