The Wichita States Shockers move to 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 sweep against the Memphis Tigers. The Shockers moved to a 5-1 offense this game to better fit the personal on the court. The Shockers scores were 25-18, 25-21 and 26-24.
Redshirt Freshman Megan Taflinger and Senior Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with 16 and 10 kills respectively. Tabitha Brown reached her 1,000th career kill in the first set of the match. Giorgia Civita also got her 1000th career dig in the third set and a match-high of 27 digs.
In the first set, the Tigers took a 6-2 lead, but the Shockers were able to take the lead with assistance by Megan Taflinger’s serving. Block assistant by Abby Pugh and Alex Koon brought the score to 20-16. Giorgia Civita’s service ace secured the win for the first set.
With a 4-0 run by the Shockers midway through the second set, back to back kills by Tabitha Brown gave the shockers a 17-13 lead over the Tigers, and a kill by Alex Koon to take the second set.
Tigers took a 10-7 lead early in the third set but kills by the Shockers allowed a 18-16 comeback. The Tigers were able to tie the match at 24 but kills by Grace Burken and Megan Taflinger sealed the match point for the Shockers 26-24. The Shockers will be back in action Saturday September 29 in Tulsa at 6 p.m.
