WICHITA, Kan. (WSU) -- Erik Stevenson scored 21 points and Wichita State rode a hot start to a 90-61 victory Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
Stevenson is the first Shocker true freshman to top 20 points in a game since Toure' Murry (23 vs. Missouri State) on Feb. 10, 2009.
Stevenson's 21 points came on 5-of-9 shooting (4-of-8 from three). He also knocked down 7-of-9 free throw attempts.
Rice (3-4) scored on its first possession of the game, then turned it over on each of the next 10. WSU (3-3) missed its first shot, then connected on 14 of the next 18.
That combination proved deadly.
The Shockers used runs of 16-0 and 15-1 to take control. They led by as many as 28 points (40-12) near the five-minute mark of the first half.
Jaime Echenique (6-of-9) scored a personal-best 14 points and recorded a block and two steals. The junior college transfer has swatted at least one shot in each of the first six contests.
Markis McDuffie scored 12 of his 14 points in the first 15 minutes to help the Shockers pull away and tacked on five assists and five rebounds. It was the senior's fifth-straight game in double-figures.
Dexter Dennis added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Ricky Torres posted a team-high five assists in 20 minutes of action. He has yet to turn the ball over in six games as a Shocker, spanning 90 total minutes.
For Rice, Chris Mullins and Jack Williams each scored 12 points apiece.
WSU outshot Rice, 46.9 percent to 37.9 percent. Neither team fared well from deep. WSU hit 8-of-24 (.292) compared to 4-of-26 for Rice (.154).
The teams finished even on the glass at 38-all, but the Shockers were plus-nine on turnovers (18-9).

After Rice took a quick 2-0 lead, McDuffie supplied eight points and Morris Udeze added six on a pair of dunks to spark a 16-0 Shocker run. The hosts led 16-2 at the 12:56-mark of the first half.
Chris Mullins hit back-to-back Rice threes – the Owls' first points in nearly seven minutes – to cut the gap to 16-8, but another six-minute field goal drought followed.
WSU responded with another 15-1 spurt, fueled this time by eight points and a pair of threes from Erik Stevenson for a 31-9 cushion at the 7:46-mark.
The Shockers led by as many as 28 points with 4:41 to go. Udeze's layup made it 40-12.
WSU led 49-25 at the half on 53 percent shooting (18-of-34). Rice shot just 27 percent (7-for-26). McDuffie led all first-half scorers with 12 points to go with 11 from Stevenson and eight from Udeze (on 4-of-4 shooting).
The Shockers and Owls traded baskets for the majority of the second-half. Rice eventually trimmed the WSU advantage to 71-54 with 6:28 remaining.
An Echenique three-pointer pushed the margin back to 20, 74-54, and the Owls would get no closer than 19 the rest of the way.
Wichita State (3-3) hosts Baylor at 7 p.m. CT Saturday on CBS Sports Network.
