Wichita State survived a road battle at Furman Wednesday night, 76-70 to move on to the second round of the NIT Tournament. The Shockers are now 20-14 overall.
Senior Markis McDuffie led the Shockers with 20 points Wednesday night. Junior Jaime Echenique had a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Echenique and sophomore big man Asbjorn Mitgaard combined for 25 points and 20 rebounds in arguably the best game of the season for the Shocker front court.
Freshman guard Eric Stevenson joined McDuffie and Echenique in double figures with 12 points.
Senior Matt Raferty led Furman with 27 points, hitting 11 of 19 shot attempts.
A 10-4 spurt in the final game's final two minutes proved to be the difference in a back-and-forth contest that saw neither team trail by more than five until the final Shocker free throw with one second left.
The No. 6 seed Shockers stay on the road to face Clemson Sunday. Wednesday's win was the 500th career victory for Wichita State Head Coach Gregg Marshall.
