MAIZE, Kan. “It’s a great feeling,” said Maize forward Paige Swanson. “It’s always hard to get going at the start of the games but once that first goal comes, it is so easy to just keep going and going because everybody gets up their momentum and their energy level just boosts.”
Swanson opened the scoring for the Eagles, and McClure made it a 2-0 lead less than two minutes later. Hutch cut the lead to 2-1 with Jazmin Hartshorn scoring almost immediately after McClure. McClure got the goal right back in a dizzying flurry.
But for the Salthawks, the offense went dry while Maize never really cooled off. Makayla Toth made it a 4-1 lead for the Eagles at the half, and opened up scoring in the 7-goal second half for Maize.
Swanson surpassed the hat trick and made it a 4-goal night, while McClure had a hat trick of her own for the Eagles.
“We played (Hutch) at the beginning of the year and we know that we can beat them,” said Swanson. “We talked about it before the game and we just kept our cool.”
