Wingnuts beat Gary in scrimmage

(Winguts) The Wichita Wingnuts launched seven home runs, banged out 22 hits, and defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 16-5 in Saturday’s exhibition at Maize South High School.
After Gary starter Jeff Mackenzie and Wingnuts righty Alex Boshers traded 1-2-3 innings in the first, the RailCats drew first blood in the bottom of the second courtesy of a two-out RBI single off the bat of John Holland. Reggie Wilson followed with a three-run triple to give Gary a 4-0 lead after two.
Harrison Kain delivered an RBI single in the top of the third to pull Wichita (1-0-1) back within 4-1, then Brent Clevlen drilled a two-run homer to trim the deficit to 4-3. First baseman Matt Chavez dumped a double into right, scoring TJ Mittelstaedt to tie the game at 4-4.
Boshers tossed a scoreless bottom of the third, before Richard Prigatano gave the Wingnuts their first lead of the ballgame with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. Clevlen added another on a sacrifice fly, giving Wichita a 6-4 advantage.
Reliever Ryan Kussmaul kept the RailCats off the board in the fourth and fifth, notching a trio of strikeouts. Brennen Salgado then tacked on a run with a solo blast in the top of the fifth to extend the Wichita lead to 7-4.
Salgado cranked his second homer of the game in the seventh, and Martin Medina followed with a solo shot of his own off Gary reliever Alex Gunn to push the Wingnuts advantage to 9-4.
Gary’s Ryan Fitzgerald responded with a solo home run to make it 9-5, but Colby Suggs prevented any further damage to preserve the four-run cushion. It didn’t take long for the Wingnuts to answer, as Clevlen added his second round-tripper of the ballgame with a solo blast in the eighth to restore the five-run lead.
Austin Boyle and Seth Harvey set the RailCats down in order over the final two frames, then the Wingnuts added six in the tenth on a Prigatano home run, a Chavez RBI single, a Salgado sacrifice fly, and a Zac Fisher three-run homer.
The Wingnuts will be back in action on Tuesday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, when they host the Winnipeg Goldeyes in their final exhibition game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
