One dead, two injured in crash on the turnpike
One person is dead after a crash involving three horses north of Andover on the turnpike.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. Friday and closed north lanes of the turnpike at the Andover exit. The lanes were opened back up around 5:15 a.m.
The Kansas Turnpike Authority says the accident involved three people in two vehicles.
Charles Shoenhair, 31, of Texas was in one car with a 25-year-old woman. His car hit a horse and the crash killed him and injured her.
Craig Maire was in another vehicle and hit another horse traveling 75 miles per hour. He shot video moments after he survived the crash.
"I was listening to music driving north on the turnpike and all of the sudden I saw something in the road, I had no time to even use any profanity. And before I knew it I hit it like a wall and I rolled over and all I thought was I was going to die," he said.
His car flipped and slid along the road on its top.
"There was just sparks that were flying from the metal of the roof and the windshield was just breaking and you could smell the airbag and the gas and stuff right away," he said.
Maire was able to escape with only a few fractured ribs. He said the doctors are telling him it's a miracle he's alive, let alone in as good of a condition as he is.
"I'm in shock right now I really am in shock. I don't know what to feel right now I'm just really really happy I know that about surviving," he said.
The Kansas Turnpike Authority said the three horses were from an adjacent property and all three died in the crash.
