3 suspected in shooting that killed 1-year-old booked for murder

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Sedgwick County Jail records confirm three arrests in connection with Monday night’s shooting at a southeast Wichita apartment complex that critically injured two women and killed a 1-year-old boy.

In connection with the case, booking details shows 21-year-old Jonathan Tillery-Matthias and 25-year-old Kveion Darnell Richard facing preliminary charges that include first-degree murder. Wichita police also confirmed arrested a 17-year-old.

Police said the man, identified by jail records as Tillery-Mathis, “is currently on pre-trial supervision for criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle, stemming from a WPD investigation. The department said the man that jail records identify as Darnell, was on parole for criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said its investigation leads the department to believe the shooting was “a targeted event which led to the death of a small child.”

“Violence in the community should outrage all of us, especially when it results in a death, and in this case the death of a small child,” Chief Joe Sullivan said, “The WPD remains committed to finding all individuals responsible for violent crime in our community and doing our part to ensure they are held accountable for their unacceptable actions.”

Monday night’s shooting was reported at about 7:20 p.m. at Sugar Creek Apartments near Pawnee and Oliver.

Additional people inside the apartment at the time of the shooting included a 24-year-old man, a 5-year-old girl, and a 10-month-old girl. Although someone fired multiple rounds into the apartment, police said those three were not injured.

Speaking with the media late Monday night, addressing the shooting, Chief Sullivan expressed anger and frustration concerning youth gun violence and “a lot of people walking around [Wichita] right now that have no business walking around this city right now.”

“Enough with the leniency, enough with worrying about the criminal, not worrying about the victim,” he said.
