Teen wins golf tournament hours after learning of grandfather’s death
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - John Ireland, 71 of Cottonwood Falls, was driving to watch his grandson, Palmer Welsh, play in a Central Links golf tournament on Thursday but never made it. Ireland was hit head-on by another car. Both drivers died in the crash.
“Kind of loss for words,” said Palmer. “I haven’t really experienced death within in my family members before so it’s kind of the first one but, yeah just really sad,” said Palmer Weslch, John’s grandson.
Palmer was told about his grandfather’s death moments before his tee time. While he knew it wasn’t the easiest thing to do, Palmer played through the heartbreak.
“I knew that he’d want me to play in it so, I didn’t back out of it just because something unfortunate happened to him,” Palmer said. “He’d still want me to go out there and try my best.”
Palmer played his best and finished first place, dedicating his win to his grandpa. He said it made him feel like he won the PGA championship.
“He used to always come to all my golf tournaments and I just knew that if I did good, he’d be proud of me,” Palmer said.
It’s a passion that connected the two.
“To see him come out on top, with a victory, for his grandpa, who was a sports addict, and even though John’s golf game stunk, he wanted to be there for Palmer,” said Scott Welsh, Palmer’s dad.
The 17-year-old said he won’t go a round without thinking about his grandpa.
“He’s a great dude. I love him. Every shot will be for him,” Palmer said.
Palmer’s parents said they’re excited for his future. They said they know Palmer will never forget his grandpa and that his grandpa will always be watching over him.
As of now, funeral arrangements for John Ireland have not been set.
