WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Geary County Sheriff’s Office said Tanker 95 and Kansas Forest Service personnel are assisting with a large wildfire south of Junction City in Geary County.

“This fire is wind driven and threatening structures,” according to the sheriff’s office. “Please be aware of your surroundings and evacuate if asked to do so.”

In Jewell County, the sheriff’s office said US-36 was closed east of the Smith County line in both directions due to the smoke and fire.

If you‘re in the area, you’re advised to avoid the highway between Mankato and Smith Center.

Storm Team 12 said dry conditions and high winds continue to fuel fire dangers across the state.

Jewell County is in a red flag warning. No burning is allowed today. If you see smoke please call it in. Thank you
