Kansas Department of Transportation once again preparing for winter storm

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Kansas Department of Transportation said it will send crews out to treat roads in the Wichita area at about midnight on Monday night.

They’ll have 23 snow plows out at a time, with more on standby in preparation for yet another a winter storm that could bring around six inches of snow.

Across the state, KDOT has the capacity to hold about 200,000 tons of pre-treat material. In a typical winter, they only use about 100,000 tons left, so KDOT expects to cross the 100,000 ton threshold. But there’s still plenty to work with.

JB Wilson of KDOT said drivers should be aware of the KDOT snow plows and maintenance trucks on Tuesday.

“The big one is put your phone down and drive for conditions. When you see our snow plows give them at least 100 feet to work. Those guys are doing a hard job. Just knowing they have the space to clear those roads helps them out a lot.”
