WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita State’s rowing team will celebrate its 50th anniversary this weekend.

The team started back in 1974, and this weekend alumni and current students will row together in the Arkansas River.

WSU assistant rowing coach Rachel Tuck said this year is special because all the progress the current team and past teams have made to keep the sport alive is evident.

When you think on rowing in a landlock state, you don’t think on ‘oh, yeah, there is going to be a lot of rowers,’ but over the years we’ve had hundreds of thousands of rowers who have gone through the program,” Tuck said.

The celebration of the 50th anniversary concludes on Sunday as WSU hosts the Regional Plains Regatta. Teams from other universities across the plains region will compete for the championship.
