Deputies find nearly $140,000 hidden in vehicle during traffic stop

GREENLAND, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) - Federal authorities are investigating after thousands of dollars in cash were found hidden in a vehicle during a traffic stop.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were recently conducting traffic enforcement on Interstate 25 near Greenland when a vehicle was spotted speeding southbound.

After conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle, deputies said the driver was acting erratically and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Deputies called in K-9 Dozer to open-air sniff the vehicle, and the K-9 alerted deputies about possible drugs being inside the car.

Authorities said a field sobriety test was performed, and a vehicle search was conducted.

While deputies said no drugs ended up being found in the vehicle, they said $136,000 was found hidden in the vehicle.

According to deputies, the K-9 alerted to the cash itself, which suggested that the money had been in close contact with drugs.

The sheriff’s office said federal authorities have taken over the investigation due to the amount of money found and the circumstances.
