Bike Walk Wichita joins cross-state ride to support refugees
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Bike Walk Wichita, a nonprofit founded in 2010 to expand access to bicycles and safe riding spaces, will take part in a cross-state cycling challenge this weekend to raise money for Kansas’ refugee community.
The group has organized a team for Ride 4 Refugees, a 418-mile trek from the Colorado border to the Missouri border, all in one day.
“Advocacy for us is we show up in city council spaces, county commission, we meet with neighborhood leaders and individuals in the community to find out what’s important to them and how we can make sure that they have safe spaces,” said Holly Terrill, executive director of Bike Walk Wichita.
The goal, Terrill said, is to raise $10,000 to support refugees in and around the state.
For riders like Cassidy Cheray, the journey is both a challenge and a chance to give back.
“It really is a cool way to see the state that you live in a short amount of time,” Cheray said. “We just want to be there as support and bring more awareness to it here.”
Cheray, who has made the trek before, added that creating safe routes for transportation is especially important for refugee families who rely on walking or biking to school and work.
The ride kicks off at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
