Tips to keep pets safe during winter weather

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Our pets may be more susceptible to the cold. The Kansas Humane Society has a few tips to keep your furry friend safe and active this winter.

If you want to take your dog on a walk, they recommend buying boots for their paws to prevent frostbite.

If your pet is outside for too long it can get hypothermia. The humane society recommends taking them to pet care if it becomes severe.

Sometimes, though, it’s as simple as bringing them inside.

“Doesn’t matter what breed, doesn’t matter if, you know, have a cat that likes to stay outdoors. Right now it’s fine, but as the weather continues to get colder and snow starts, hopefully, falling on the ground, it’s just really important to bring them inside,” said Jordan Bani-Younes with the Kansas Humane Society.

Other tips include:

• Wiping down paws after walks along paths with ice-melting chemicals as it can irritate their feet
• Much like summertime, don’t leave pets in cars during extreme cold
• Take shorter walks
