Woman receives sentence for stabbing husband to death at assisted living facility

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV/Gray News) - A 73-year-old Colorado woman convicted of second-degree murder in the death of her husband was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Kathy Lawton was found guilty in December 2025 for the November 2024 stabbing death of Larry Lawton.

The 85-year-old husband was found stabbed at the Bonaventure Assisted Living Center after Kathy Lawton told staff members that her husband was dead, investigators said.

According to police records, an officer said alcohol could be smelled on Kathy Lawton’s breath and she appeared intoxicated when she was arrested at her home.

The 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said the Pueblo woman was also sentenced to five years of mandatory parole after she serves the 20-year prison term.
