Analyst: Undecided voters could decide Kansas governor’s race this fall

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - As candidates begin naming running mates in the race for Kansas governor, a political expert says the outcome may be less predictable than many voters assume.

Some Kansans expect the state to elect a Republican this fall, pointing to a pattern of switching parties in the governor’s office. But Dr. Michael Smith, a professor at Emporia State University, said that is not necessarily the case, especially with a crowded Republican field.

Smith said a group of GOP candidates has emerged as early front-runners: Senate President Ty Masterson, Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, former Gov. Jeff Colyer and Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. He said there is not a clear leader among the four.

On the Democratic side, Smith said state Reps. Ethan Corson and Cindy Holscher are running close.

While Kansas currently has a Democratic governor, Smith said national politics could shape the race in ways that leave an opening for Democrats.

“Nationally we anticipate it’s going to be a good year for the Democrats because of President Trump’s low approval ratings,” Smith said. “Of course he has more supporters in Kansas percentage-wise, but a lot of the things happening in this country hit Kansas.”

Smith said the key group to watch is undecided voters, including those who are dissatisfied with both President Trump and Democrats. He said an “authentic” candidate from either party could win them over.
