A mother of three is dead as is the man police say killed her after an apparent murder -suicide Tuesday morning in southeast Wichita.

At about 5:10 a.m. Monday, Wichita police officers responded to an unknown call for police at a home in the 5800 block of East Skinner. Police say this response came after a family member received a call from 44-year-old Robbie Urbano, asking her to pick up his children due to an emergency. The family member then called police.

When they arrived, officers contacted the family member outside the home with small children. Officers saw signs of a disturbance at the home and inside, they found 33-year-old Cherie Short with a gunshot wound and her boyfriend, Urbano, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both Short and Urbano died at the scene, police say. No children were injured.

Investigators say there was an argument at the home between Short and Urbano during which, Urbano got a gun and shot Short.

Monday afternoon, Short's family reports her three children are all safe with relatives. While shaken by what happened, Short's family tells Eyewitness News they're trying to focus on happy memories.

"If you knew (Short), to know her was to love her," Short's cousin, Victoria Boyd says. "She was amazing. Cherie was the best person. If you needed anything, she'd give you the shirt off her back. You couldn't make this up. It's really shocking to our family. It's really a hard blow and we don't know how we're going to take it at this point, but we're trying to process the best for her kids and just stay positive."

Short's family set up a memorial outside the home on East Skinner to remember the mother of three. Police say they also learned Urbano recently was charged in a federal case.

The investigation revealed a disturbance ensued in the home between Urbano and Short, and he obtained a handgun and fired a shot, killing Short and then fired a shot killing himself. Additionally, it was learned Urbano was also recently facing alleged federal charges.

The investigation is ongoing, police say.
