Wichita State University cancels certain graduation events amid federal, state pressure

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita State University has canceled certain graduation traditions this year. The university said it’s in response to federal orders, agency guidance, and state legislation.

Wichita State University traditionally holds graduation events for certain students. That includes multicultural graduations, lavender graduations, and first-generation ceremonies.

At these ceremonies, students would receive their cords or stoles that they would then wear during the university’s commencement.

Instead, WSU told 12 News on Saturday that it will combine the celebrations into “The Toast.” The university explained “The Toast” as “a celebratory event scheduled prior to graduation - is open to students of all backgrounds, interests, and majors and will offer students an opportunity to express their cultural and academic backgrounds with a selection of cords that can be worn at graduation.”

In February, the U.S. Department of Education sent a “Dear Colleague Letter” to universities that receive money from the federal government. That letter told Wichita State University and other universities that they must stop the use of race preferences and stereotypes as a factor in their admissions, hiring, promotion, compensation, scholarships, prizes, administrative support, sanctions, discipline, and beyond.

This year, the Kansas Legislature passed, and Governor Laura Kelly signed a bill that would not force accrediting agencies to require policies or classes that are prohibited in a state.

The complete statement provided by Wichita State University on Saturday: “The university, like many universities, is transitioning to a consolidated celebration for our graduating students in response to recent federal orders, agency guidance, and state legislation. The Toast - a celebratory event scheduled prior to graduation - is open to students of all backgrounds, interests and majors and will offer students an opportunity to express their cultural and academic backgrounds with a selection of cords that can be worn at graduation.”

All Wichita State commencement ceremonies will continue as planned on May 16 and 17 at Charles Koch Arena.

Correction: We previously mentioned that “The Toast” was canceled this year. However, that was in reference to the 2020 event.
