Court case unsealed in Great Bend teen’s death
Case involving 14-year-old boy charged with murder transferred to new judge
GREAT BEND, Kan. (KWCH) - Update: A district court judge has unsealed the case against a Great Bend teen charged with murder.
The 14-year-old boy is accused of killing Rubi Perez, another 14-year-old.
The case was originally sealed by a judge, preventing the public and media from any access to the case. But this week, a district court judge overruled the other judge and unsealed the case.
In his order, the judge said the original judge had no authority to close the case.
One attorney told 12 News it’s unusual for one judge to call out the order of another judge.
Court records show the suspect’s attorneys are due back in court May 5 for a scheduling conference.
The case involving a 14-year-old boy charged in the death of another teenager has been unsealed.
Fourteen-year-old Rubi Perez from Great Bend was found dead on April 9, a few blocks away from her school. A 14-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
Judge Timarie Ann Walters sealed the case on April 16. An order closing the files to public inspection was signed about week later. On April 24, the case was transferred to Judge Levi Morris and has since been unsealed.
12 News has reached out to the court for details on the reassignment and to determine the teen’s next day in court.
