Veterinarian advises plan to keep pets safe this Halloween
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Some Halloween traditions can threaten pet safety, and veterinarians at Countryside Pet Clinic in Andover say pet owners should have a plan in place to prevent a pet from escaping.
Decorations with electrical cords, flashing lights, candles, glow sticks or small pieces should be kept away from pets.
Moldy pumpkins should be thrown away to prevent accidental digestion.
Plan for escapes
Dr. Sherry Ibrahim, a veterinarian at Countryside Pet Clinic in Andover, said opening the door for trick-or-treaters creates a risk of a dog escaping.
“You’re opening your door pretty frequently for trick-or-treaters, which is a really great way for a dog to escape, and it’s also risky if they are particularly scared of strangers. Or in some cases because they like strangers a whole lot and they wanna go join the party,” Ibrahim said.
Chocolate and costumes
Ibrahim said the most dangerous thing for pets is chocolate toxicity. She said owners should keep sweet treats out of reach.
Ibrahim said Halloween costumes for pets should be comfortable. She said anything covering a pet’s face can be dangerous.
