'Navy Week' brings branch band to Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. A band with the United States Navy performed in Wichita Monday as part of its effort to promote the branch and encourage more people to consider joining.

The Great Lakes Regional U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band performed Monday at the ICT Pop-Up Urban Park and at Wichita Heights High School.

The band will play at more local schools Tuesday, followed by a performance Wednesday at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Matthew Durr, Musician 2nd Class in the Navy band, gave Eyewitness News a little bit of insight into what it's like performing with the nationally-embraced group.

"Well, as far as Navy music goes, it gives people a chance to basically have a full-time job playing their horn and doing it for their country," Durr says. "And that's one of the biggest takeaways I have from the job, not a lot of musicians get to say that."

Also in Wichita for Navy Week are members from the recently-commissioned, USS Wichita. . Two Wichita area natives in the U.S. Navy are serving aboard the littoral combat ship that bears their city's name.
